19-Year-Old College Student Shot To Death In Front Yard Of Lakewood Home

LAKEWOOD (CBSLA.com) — A 19-year-old man was shot and killed in the front yard of his Lakewood home Thursday afternoon.

The incident happened at 1:45 p.m. at the residence in the 3700 block of Arbor Road.

Police said the victim was confronted by two Hispanic men, who shot him and fled in a four-door, older model Toyota Camry.

"(The car) was last seen on Arbor going westbound," said Lt. Dave Coleman of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Friends identified the victim as Cyrus Alva, who was an Engineering major at Long Beach City College.

"I'm just shocked. It's crazy," said Greg Law.

Josh Lemos said he knew Alva as a person who loved to skateboard.

"He liked to skate. Like any teenage kid, he liked to party, he liked to do everything. I came to say 'bye' to him, but he's gone," he said.

Friend Melanie Sanchez said Alva wasn't involved in any gangs.

"He didn't seem like that type. We're all friendly in Lakewood. We all know each other," she said.

Neighbors, however, said they'd often see Alva arguing with his older brother and said police had been out to the home before.

Authorities wouldn't say if Alva was targeted.

Anyone with information on the case was encouraged to contact the sheriff's Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500.
