Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Councilwoman Jan Perry joined executives from Marriott, AEG, and other firms at the site of the dual Residence Inn and Courtyard By Marriot that officials billed as being a first of its kind.

The location sits at the heart of L.A. Live at Olympic Boulevard and Francisco Street, where Villaraigosa said the excitement was palpable.

"You can feel the synergy that's being created here, the synergy of investment, the synergy of people, the synergy of the city all coming together," he said.

The $172 million project is expected to bring over 400 rooms to the bustling entertainment district that already houses Staples Center and the Nokia Theatre, along with as many as 5,000 jobs between groundbreaking and the hotels' opening.

The new building will contain a 174-room Courtyard by Marriott and a 218-room Residence Inn by Marriott, as well as meeting rooms, restaurants and bars.

SODO Builders LLC will be the lead construction firm. The designer is GBD Architects of Portland, and Degen & Degen of Seattle is in charge of interior design.

Construction is expected to begin this spring and complete in the summer of 2014.
