The fast-moving blaze, which broke out around 7:30 p.m. Friday, burned near Tehachapi and Willow Springs just south of Oak, according to Kern County Fire.
No structures were threatened and no injuries were reported.
Firefighters initially thought that they would be able to control the fire within a few hours, but that didn't turn out to be the case.
About a dozen fire engines and a water truck were dispatched to battle the fire.
