15 Freeway To Vegas Reopens After Standoff With Man Suspected Of Murdering His Mother
PRIMM, Nev. (CBSLA) — Southern California's most direct route to Las Vegas was shut down for nearly 24 hours after an officer-involved shooting with a man suspected of murdering and dismembering his mother.
The northbound 15 Freeway was shut down late Wednesday after 27-year-old suspect Madison Adams apparently shot himself, prompting deputies to begin firing. No deputies were injured in the shooting.
The freeway reopened just before 4 p.m. Thursday afternoon.
The chase followed a grisly discovery in Tehachapi in Kern County, where deputies were called to do a welfare check on the suspect's mother. The 55-year-old woman, a California corrections officer identified as Guadulupe Adams, was found dismembered inside her home.
San Bernardino County sheriff's deputies spotted the suspect's Nissan stopped on the shoulder of the 15 Freeway, just south of the California-Nevada state line at about 4:45 p.m. As deputies tried to make contact, they heard gunfire and opened fire on the car.
Police say Adams appeared to have shot himself and was declared dead at the scene.
Southbound lanes were reopened Wednesday night, but some drivers headed northbound were stuck on the freeway overnight while police sorted through the mess.
"I was coming down the mountain last night about five o'clock, ran into the traffic jam, been sittin' here ever since," said one truck driver.
