13th Annual Herbalife Triathlon Brings More Street Closures
VENICE (CBSLA.com) – The closing of I-405 wasn't the only thing that kept Los Angeles residents off the road Sunday morning.
Streets near the coast were shut down because of the 13th annual Herbalife Triathlon.
More than 2,500 people started the triathlon at 7:15 a.m. with a 1500-meter swim at Venice Beach. Then they competed in a 24.8-mile bicycle race to the Staples Center and wrapped up with a 6.2-mile run through downtown Los Angeles finishing at LA Live.
Competitors came from 30 different states, the District of Columbia and 13 nations.
"You're starting at Venice Beach and you're finishing at LA Live, and you're getting to go faster than you would ever go in a car to downtown. It's 16 miles to downtown, and a lot of the pros will do it in 45-50 minutes," Triathlon Race Director Jack Caress said.
There were more professionals competing in the Herbalife Triathlon in comparison to past years. This was the sixth national competition out of a seven event series.
The championship is scheduled for next Sunday in Dallas, Texas.
