Authorities Investigating Fatal Deputy-Involved-Shooting In Castiac Area
CASTAIC (CBSLA) — Authorities are investigating a fatal deputy-involved-shooting at a rest stop off the 5 Freeway in the Castiac area.
The shooting happened after noon Wednesday at a rest stop along the 5 Freeway at Vista Del Lago, near Pyramid Lake in the Grapevine.
Video from Sky 9 shows a burgundy sedan with its front bumper partially hanging off the hood, stopped at an angle on the shoulder of the freeway after it crashed into the side of a hill.
Authorities say a deputy had stopped the the man, had him exit his vehicle and was taking him back to a patrol car when he broke free and ran up an embankment. The man was pursued back to the door of his vehicle where an "altercation occurred," and he drove off, dragging the deputy with him.
Deputy Alejandra Parra said the suspect crashed through a chain-link fence on the shoulder, then again through a fence back to the frontage road, when the deputies opened fire.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene and his name was not immediately released.
The deputy who was dragged was treated for injuries at a hospital and later released.
The freeway's right lanes were closed for the shooting investigation and traffic was backed up in the area.
