WEST HOLLYWOOD (CBSLA.com) — An elderly man is dead and another man critically injured after being hit by a bus in West Hollywood late Monday night.
The two men, ages 81 and 50 years old, were crossing the street at the intersection of Santa Monica Boulevard and Palm Avenue around 11:40 p.m. when they were hit by an MTA bus, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said.
The bus driver told authorities that he was driving the vehicle back to the depot at the end of his shift when the accident happened.
The unidentified victims were transported to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where the elderly man died.
The 50-year-old man remains hospitalized in critical condition, the sheriff's department said.
"The bus driver . . . is cooperating fully with us and giving investigators whatever information they need," Lt. Sergio Aloma said.
The driver underwent a routine toxicology test to determine if alcohol or drugs were in his system. The results of the test have not been released.
No passengers were on board the bus at the time of the accident.
