Handcuffed 18-Year-Old Killed In Officer-Involved Shooting In Moreno Valley
MORENO VALLEY (CBSLA.com) — Authorities on Saturday continued to investigate the circumstances surrounding a deadly officer-involved shooting of a handcuffed 18-year-old in the Inland Empire.
A statement issued by the Moreno Valley Police Department says an officer was dispatched to the 25000 block of Fir Avenue about 8:38 p.m. Friday following a report of a man with a gun.
After arriving on scene, the officer was told that a group of men -- allegedly involved in a disturbance -- had fled in a car prior to the officer's arrival.
Moments later, the suspected vehicle was spotted and the officer tried to stop it. Police said that's when a man tried to flee on foot.
That individual, later identified by authorities as 18-year-old Lamon Khiry Haslip of Ontario, was detained and placed in handcuffs, according to police.
"As this was occurring, an additional officer arrived on scene and observed the subject roll onto his side," the statement said. "The initial officer backed away from the subject and announced that the subject had a gun, at which time an officer involved shooting occurred."
Haslip was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were hurt.
Officials haven't revealed who fired the shot that killed Haslip.
According to the statement, an officer has been placed on administrative leave, which is the standard policy for the department.
Police said the suspect's handgun was recovered at the scene.
