DUI Driver Blamed For 3-Vehicle Crash That Left 18-Year-Old Dead, 5 Injured

SANTA ANA (CBSLA.com) — Authorities say a drunk driver caused a three-vehicle crash in Santa Ana Saturday that left one 18-year-old man dead and five others injured.

Officers responded to the crash around 9:30 p.m. Saturday at Bristol Street just south of Central Avenue.

The deceased was a passenger in a Honda struck by the alleged drunk driver, officials said.

City News Service identified the deceased as Roberto Rubio. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities identified the suspected drunk driver as Herbert Granados Calderon, 23, of Santa Ana. Calderon was also allegedly driving on a suspended license which was previously suspended for a DUI, police said.

Investigators said a Lexus -- driven by Calderon -- was going southbound on Bristol St. and failed to stop at a red light at Central Avenue.

The Lexus reportedly broadsided the Honda. The Honda, in turn, slammed into a Chevrolet pick-up truck.

Officials said three of the five injured suffered serious trauma, two people had minor injuries. Two of the victims had to be cut from the wreckage.

Any witnesses to the collision were asked to contact Investigator Hadley from the Santa Ana Police Department Collision Investigation Unit at (714) 245-8216.
