1 Hurt After Car Crashes Into Huntington Beach Church
HUNTINGTON BEACH (CBS) — Firefighters extricated a victim from a pick-up truck that crashed into a Huntington Beach church on Tuesday.
The crash occurred around 10:16 a.m. at Gothard Street and Warner Avenue, according to Huntington Beach Fire officials.
Firefighters freed the driver from the wreckage and took him to a hospital, but there was no immediate word on his condition, Huntington Beach deputy fire marshal Jeff Lopez said.
The intersection was partially shut down immediately following the crash.
No one was in the 106-year-old church at the time of the crash, Reverend Steve Orman said.
"I was in the back building," he said. "I certainly heard it. It was a loud bang, no brakes or anything."
It is the third crash that has damaged the church over the past 25 years, Orman said.
He called the damage "very extensive," adding his congregation would likely hold services in the church's fellowship building until further notice.
Workers were trying to shore up the church's damaged tower, Orman said.
City building and safety officials will have to clear the building for occupancy when the repairs are finished, he added.
