Family Of Man Killed By CHP Officers In El Sereno Says He Was Unarmed
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) - A man was fatally shot by California Highway Patrol officers Tuesday in the El Sereno area of Los Angeles.
The shooting occurred at about 3:30 p.m. in the area of Medford and North Indiana streets, near the USC Keck School of Medicine, according to the CHP.
Security video from an East LA business shows the man at the center of the fatal shooting walking down Medford Street. He quickly raises a hand, then lowers it. Just before he walks out of frame, a CHP cruiser drives up behind him, and two officers get out and follow him.
For the next eight seconds, you can't see or hear what transpired between the three of them. But then the officers, with their weapons drawn, back away from the man, who is quickly walking toward them.
We paused the video before the man was fatally shot.
"He was a good kid. This was a murder," said Jesus Chavez, the victim's brother. "I want justice for my brother."
The family of Leo Chavez, 24, and their attorney demanded answers from the CHP about why they shot him when witnesses said he was unarmed.
"He had no weapon," said Humberto Guizar, the family's attorney. "He was shot in cold blood."
CBSLA reached out to the CHP for comment about the incident but have not heard back.
