Man And His Dog Die In Construction Accident On 10 Freeway In El Monte
EL MONTE (CBS) — A man and his dog died and two workers were injured early Tuesday in a construction zone accident on the San Bernardino (10) Freeway in El Monte, authorities said.
The crash, just east of Peck Road, was reported at 4:08 a.m. after a white minivan slammed into the back of a Caltrans truck, the California Highway Patrol said.
The workers were picking up cones from a lane when the accident occurred.
The unidentified driver of the van, who is believed to be in his 40s, died at the scene, according to officials.
The two construction workers suffered minor injuries and were transported to a local hospital.
One lane near Peck Road remained open following the accident. Traffic was being diverted off the westbound 10 and onto the San Gabriel River (605) Freeway, officials said.
Tuesday's crash marks the second accident involving Caltrans employees since Sunday when two workers were killed by an alleged drunk driver.
