1 Killed, Rabbi Injured After Being Hit By Car Outside Synagogue
HANCOCK PARK (CBS) — An elderly man was killed and another critically injured after they were hit by a car near a synagogue in the Larchmont area.
Officials say the two men were hit around 6:20 a.m. Tuesday as they crossed an intersection in the 300 block of North La Brea Avenue near Oakwood. They were leaving early morning Minyan at Bais Yeshuda Shul.
Berish Landau, 88, died from his injuries.
Rabbi Shmuel Jacobs, 50, was also injured and was listed in critical condition.
Landau lived blocks from the synagogue and preferred walking alone to services. Congregation members said he had trouble crossing the intersection in front of the building and Jacobs was helping him cross the street when the accident occurred.
Police say the driver knew the victims and stopped after the accident to assist.
There were no plans to charge the 27-year-old driver, according to LAPD Officer Karen Rayner. Police don't believe alcohol, drugs or speeding were factors in the accident.
Landau is survived by his son, who's a leader in the community and active volunteer.
