1 dead after argument on basketball court leads to shooting in Hawthorne
One person is dead and another hospitalized after a shooting in Hawthorne on Sunday.
The shooting happened at around 11:30 a.m. in the 2000 block of 120th Street, near Holly Park, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
Deputies said that the victims, both adult males, were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment where one later died.
His identity has not yet been released.
The second victim's condition is not known.
"Investigators have discovered there was an organized basketball game at the location amongst adults," said a statement from LASD. "During the game, there was a disagreement between players and one group left the location and returned a short time later. Upon their return, they exited their vehicle and began shooting at the other group."
It was during this incident that both victims were struck by gunfire.
Investigators noted that a third group ran from the scene through the park, and that the "shooters entered their vehicle and drove ahead, to cut the fleeing victims off."
They also fired shots during this incident, but no one was struck.
With SkyCal overhead, a car with several shattered windows could be seen in the parking lot of the park. A second car could be seen parked in the next spot over. Evidence markers littered the area surrounding the cars, where there were also piles of clothing and shoes.
No information was provided on the suspects in the shooting.
