"We're looking at a lot of red ink from now until next summer," hog farmer Mike Patterson said, adding. "We're looking at ... 10 months before you get into the black again."
Recent college graduates like Sarah Sporko are still feeling the effects.
Nick Darby, a State Farms Arena guest engagement manager, says he's working remotely — and he'll also be taking on the responsibilities of a polling place worker.
The tailgates, barbecues and pre-game parties at fraternity houses with large crowds crammed into small spaces is "obviously not going to be the situation" anymore, said one student.
"If the industry were a patient, we could say that it has a number of pre-existing conditions, and that's made the prognosis in the wake of COVID-19 way more complicated," said one energy analyst.
In Artesia, one in 5 workers were directly employed by oil and gas companies. Businesses that provide services for the industry have also seen revenues dry up.
With school set to restart in the coming weeks, education leaders and local stakeholders have had to assess the internet and technological gaps facing students who can't afford technology or live outside of the range of internet connectivity.
Advocates who work directly with affected families spoke with CBS News about how COVID-19 has exacerbated their need for running water.
"We don't want our children to be lab rats," one student tells CBS News, in this latest COVID Chronicles report.
"I don't want to have to see any of my students or colleagues lose their lives," said one special education teacher.
"We're down 80% of sales while trying to keep 100% of staff. It can't be done," said one dry cleaning industry executive.
"Are people going to go back to work? Are they going to need clothes when they go back to work or are they never going to go back to work," a Pennsylvania clothing boutique owner wonders.
