How to buy Broadway tickets online for "The Music Man," "Wicked," "Hamilton" and more
It's official: You're headed to Broadway – as an audience member, that is. Congratulations, and let's help you buy your seats online. Right now, the hottest ticket of the season is "The Music Man," the musical revival starring Hugh Jackman, Sutton Foster and, literally, a chorus of 76 trombones (à la, the show's classic rousing number, "Seventy-Six Trombones").

If you're planning a Broadway trip around "The Music Man," then there are a few things to know. For starters, Hugh Jackman is expected to be with the show at least into the fall. At the same time, the show has posted a series of dates in which Jackman will definitely not be appearing as huckster Harold Hill. If you want to see Hollywood's Wolverine singing and dancing in "The Music Man," then you'll want to avoid these already-scheduled Jackman-free dates in 2022: Aug. 15 to Aug. 21; Sept. 5 to Sept. 11; and, Oct. 10 to Oct. 16.
Another consideration: Currently, and through at least April 30, all Broadway shows are enforcing a number of COVID-19 rules for theatergoers. These rules include masks, and proof of vaccination (for those ages 5 and older). For the complete list of requirements, and to check in on possible updates, visit the website for the industry trade group the Broadway League.
So, are you settled now on when you're making your Broadway visit? Great. Then here are your next steps for buying your "Music Man" tickets online.
The official sites for "The Music Man" and its theater, the Winter Garden, send you to Telecharge. There, you can search for seats from now through Nov. 6 of this year. Prices vary, depending on the dates you select (and, yup, Friday-Sunday shows will probably be more expensive than, say, a Wednesday performance). When we checked, list prices were roughly $99 to $500-ish for orchestra seats, and anywhere from $200-ish to $400-ish for mezzanine tickets. (List prices do not include fees – and, yup, there are fees.)
For more seats (and prices), you can check out third-party, resale options at sites like Ticketmaster, StubHub and SeatGeek.
Wherever you buy your online tickets, be sure to check out the site's COVID cancellation policies. The good news is, the ticket sites we visited have them, and they're trying to be flexible. But read the fine print before you buy.
Below is a review of "Music Man" ticket sites we checked out.
How to buy Broadway tickets online for "Wicked"
Though it's been running for nearly 20 years, the wickedly enduring "Wicked" remains one of Broadway's biggest shows: For the week ended March 27, per Broadway League stats, the musical at the Gershwin Theatre was the industry's second-top grosser, behind only "The Music Man."
If you're looking to see "Wicked" on Broadway for the first time – or, for the 40th – then you'll want to head over to the show's official site. From there, you can select your dates, from now through late November. Once you settle on a day and time, you'll be taken to Ticketmaster.
When we visited Ticketmaster, we randomly selected an 8 p.m., Saturday show in mid-July. Seat prices ranged from the low $100s to the low $200s (before fees). Your mileage, of course, may vary.
Broaden your search by checking out available seats and prices at sites such as StubHub, SeatGeek and Telecharge.
If you're in the New York City area, or can jet it at a moment's notice, then you can try to nab a "Wicked" online bargain via Broadway Direct's lottery system. There, you can enter for a chance to score a ticket (usually for a same-day or next-day performance) at a cut-rate price. "Wicked" is one of seven shows currently involved in the program. (And, nope, "The Music Man" isn't one of them. Neither is "Hamilton.")
How to buy Broadway tickets online for "Hamilton"
If you were priced out of Broadway's "Hamilton" a few years ago, when resale tickets for Lin-Manuel Miranda's Tony-winning phenomenon were going for $1,000-plus, then you may want to give the show a second look. Miranda and the original cast may be long gone, but the musical remains a draw, and was Broadway's third-biggest grosser for the week ended March 27. And, best of all for your wallet, ticket prices have dropped considerably.
As with the other shows covered here, the best place to start your search for online tickets is with the production's official site. At last look, the "Hamilton" site was advising that best ticket availability was for weeknights this April and May. But once you click the "get tickets" button, and are taken to Ticketmaster, you're free to search for dates between now and late October.
When we visited, a sweet, third-row, center-aisle orchestra seat at the Richard Rodgers Theatre for a Wednesday performance in mid-May was going for $399 (plus fees) – and 2017 just called, and said, "What? So cheap?" We saw similar prices for similar seats for Wednesday performances in the summer, too. Again, prices vary, depending on your selected dates and seat locations.
Expand your ticket search by checking out sites such as StubHub, SeatGeek and Telecharge.
How to buy Broadway tickets online for other shows
If you know you want to go to a Broadway show, but don't know which show, then you can check out (and buy tickets through) sites like Broadway.com, Broadway Direct and NYC.com. They'll give you overviews of what's open and what's available. Once you settle on a show, it's still a good idea to visit its official site, and see what the ticket situation is there. The big four ticket-sellers we've covered here today are also good places to start a general search. Wherever you go to buy your tickets, remember to take a bow when you're done – you've arrived on Broadway.
