Woman & Child Stabbed To Death In Bedford

BEDFORD (CBSDFW.COM) - A 30-year-old woman and an 8-year-old boy were stabbed to death inside of a Bedford apartment on Wednesday night, and a 12-year-old boy was also taken to the hospital by air ambulance with stab wounds.

Authorities were called to the Colonial Village at Shore Creek, located in the 1400 block of Park Place Boulevard, just before 8:45 p.m. Wednesday night. When they arrived, they found multiple victims inside of the third-floor apartment. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner was called to the scene. Sgt. Jerry Buford with the Bedford Police Department called it one of the worst crime scenes he has ever seen. "Most of the men that work for me have children," he said. "We're family men, and it's a horrific thing to see a thing like this."

The victims were later identified as 30-year-old Roxann Diana Sanchez and 8-year-old Anthony Reyes Figueroa. Police have not identifed the other boy who was injured. The relationship of the three victims has not been released.

A man suspected in the murders was arrested by Oklahoma Highway Patrol officers shortly after 11:00 p.m. Wednesday night, about 70 miles north of the Oklahoma-Texas border. He has been identified as 38-year-old Cedric Ricks, the woman's ex-boyfriend. He contacted a family member after the incident, and that family member alerted law enforcement officers about the situation. Ricks was driving the victim's vehicle. He was taken into custody without incident and is being held under a $2 million Texas warrant.

Police said that Ricks will face two charges for murder, one charge for attempted murder and a charge for stealing the victim's vehicle. These are the first homicides in Bedford this year.

The 12-year-old boy is in critical condition at the hospital. Police said that an 8-month-old child was also in the apartment and taken to the hospital, but with no apparent wounds. That infant, authorities said, is the child of the victim and the suspect. "My understanding is that there was some sort of protective order, that it expired in January of this year," said Buford. The 8-month-old baby is currently in the care of Child Protective Services.

Neighbors heard a commotion when distraught family members arrived on the scene. "I'm just praying to them," said Kerstyn Wiggins. "If anything happened to one of my family members, I would be just as upset as they are."

"I don't like it," said neighbor Paul Morse. "We live in a gated community, and there's stuff like this going on. It doesn't really make me feel safe."

The 8-year-old and 12-year-old boys both attend Spring Garden Elementary School in the H-E-B Independent School District.

"We have counselors on hand at school today, primarily for the teachers and staff," said district spokeswoman Judy Everett Ramos in a statement. "We will send a letter home with children today. We will have counselors again tomorrow for both staff and children who need to talk to someone."
