UTA Tops UTSA In New Arena's Debut
ARLINGTON (AP) - LaMarcus Reed scored 24 points and Texas-Arlington stretched its school-record winning streak to 12 in a row, christening its new arena with a 67-66 victory over UTSA on Wednesday night.
Kevin Butler added 21 points for the Mavericks (16-5, 8-0 Southland). He made two free throws with 13 seconds left, ending a 3-minute scoring drought for both teams.
Jeromie Hill missed a tying 3-pointer for UTSA (14-8, 6-2) before a put-back basket at the buzzer by Melvin Johnson, who had 14 points. Kannon Burrage led the Roadrunners with 21 points.
After more than 46 years at Texas Hall, where their court was an actual stage in an auditorium, the Mavericks played their first game in the $78 million College Park Center on the other side of campus.
UTSA, which had won five in a row, jumped out to a 9-0 lead. Arlington didn't score until Reed's free throw nearly 4 minutes into the game.
The Mavericks then scored 10 points in a 54-second span. In between a pair of 3-pointers by Bo Ingram, Cameron Catlett had consecutive steals -- leading to a fast-break layup by him and one by Reed.
Reed had 19 points by halftime, including seven in Texas-Arlington's half-ending 9-0 run for a 40-33 lead.
Ingram finished with 11 points, including three 3-pointers.
