Texas College World Series Player A Testament In Perseverance
OMAHA, NEBRASKA (CBSDFW.COM) - Even though the College World Series is in Omaha, Nebraska there is quite a Lone Star State flavor to the games. You see, three teams from Texas are still 'alive' in the series!
Tuesday Texas Tech will try to avoid elimination against Ole Miss.
A lot of people were surprised Tech didn't start their lefty freshman -- all-American Dylan Dusek.
Dusek has had an impressive career at Tech, but the journey that has taken him to the College World Series is the inspiring part of his story.
Every parent in Nebraska this week is proud of their child on the field. While a trip to the College World Series is remarkable in and of itself, Dusek's story is nothing short of a miracle.
Dylan's mom, Cheryl Dusek, explained, "He had leukemia… acute lymphocytic leukemia."
Dylan was only three-years-old when he was diagnosed. The then-little boy managed to beat cancer by the time he was six. It's that same fight that now makes the 19-year-old fearless on the mound.
"It just made him so strong," his dad, Patrick Dusek, said. "It don't matter who you send to the plate he's going after you."
In August, Dylan will celebrate his 13 year anniversary of beating the thing he wouldn't let kill him.
Dusek's stats his freshman year are outstanding. He's 8 and 0 this season and has a team best 1.94 era.
But to his family those numbers aren't what's impressive. "Ya know baseball is a game. Okay baseball's fun, it's a baseball game, this is awesome, but in the big picture of life he's a survivor," his mom said proudly.
The road to Omaha just happens to be another reason to celebrate a young man's testament to never giving up.
Dylan Dusek is expected to get the start Thursday if Tech advances.
