SPCA-Dallas DA's Office Team Seize Cruelly Treated Dogs
DALLAS COUNTY (CBSDFW.COM) - Wednesday workers with the SPCA of Texas took custody of two cruelly treated dogs found at a house in the Pleasant Grove neighborhood of Dallas.
The seizure was the first for the new partnership between the SPCA and the Dallas County District Attorney's Office's Animal Cruelty Unit.
After someone complained investigators with the SPCA and District Attorney's Office went to the house on April 30. They found the dogs in the backyard, without food or water. Both were underweight and have tick infestations in their ears, on their paws and on their body.
Investigators subsequently went to the property a number of times and left two tags on door asking that the owner contact officials about bringing the dogs' conditions into compliance. The owner never responded.
When officials returned with a seizure warrant on May 8 the animal owner was there and said he was unable to care for the dogs. The man went on to say he had tried to treat the dogs' tick infestation by cleaning them with dishwashing soap, which is ineffective.
The dogs are now at the Jan Rees-Jones Animal Care Center in West Dallas, where they're receiving medical treatment and will be cared for until the custody hearing scheduled for May 16.
The goal of the SPCA and Dallas DA partnership is to not only investigate cruelty complaints and remove animals, but to hold individuals who abuse, torture and kill animals, accountable by prosecuting them to the fullest extent of the law.
Last year there were more than 2,500 cases of animal cruelty reported in Dallas County.
