MIDLOTHIAN (CBSDFW.COM) - Police still don't know why mother of three and fitness instructor Terri "Missy" Bevers was killed, but they do know how.
A search warrant obtained by CBS11 said she died of a head wound. The court document said the suspect used "an unknown instrument" to kill her inside the Creekside Church of Christ around 5 o'clock Monday morning.
G.M. Cox is a retired police chief, who now teaches at Tarleton State University in Fort Worth. "I understand there are over two dozen investigators working this case, so they're all having assignments, working different angles, trying to play backwards time, where was she when, what was going on," he said.
Cox said when he watched surveillance video of the suspect, shown walking inside the church and wearing a helmet and police jacket, he focused on what could have been that instrument the search warrant mentioned. "I was very interested to see what was in the person's left hand. Almost nothing is being mentioned about that but there's something clearly in the suspect's left hand," said Cox.
This search warrant said investigators are now looking through Mrs. Bevers' financial information and communications with others to see if they lead to the killer. The FBI has now joined the ATF and Texas Rangers in assisting Midlothian police. The search warrant says investigators found a purse, iPad, and other items inside Bevers' pick-up truck.
Bevers' family said her husband picked up his wife's truck from the police department Thursday afternoon.
"There's clearly planning, this is not a haphazard crime. It certainly looks like the individual took time to learn the territory, got dressed into a uniform. He or she's got a gape, that could either be made up or on purpose. They took a lot of effort in disguising themselves," said Cox.
