COPPELL (CBSDFW.COM) - Coppell ISD is looking into its high school football program after several parents filed official grievances alleging misconduct among the coaching staff.
Some parents said there has been favoritism among who gets to play. They said it has led to tension and now fights.
Several of those parents who are concerned over the conduct of the coaching staff protested outside Coppell ISD headquarters on Monday night.
"It's just sort of reached the boiling point," said Ron Hanson, whose son plays on the team. "There's an extreme tension in the locker room among the kids. There's a great fear of retaliation. Kids are worried if they say anything, they won't play.
Parents point out the athletic director has several of his relatives on the coaching staff. His son, who is a sophomore, is also the starting quarterback.
"This kids that should be playing, aren't and that's frustrating," said Hanson.
Not everyone feels the program is heading in a bad direction. A few took the time to speak out in favor of the coaching staff. "It's unfortunate. It divides the team. It divides our community," said Paul Thompson.
Some parents questioned the timing addressing the issue.
"Bringing this up during the season is the wrong thing to do," said Jeff Fink, a parent.
A spokesperson for Coppell ISD said no one involved could comment because official grievances had been filed.
