McKinney Named Nation's 2nd Best Place To Live
MCKINNEY (CBSDFW.COM) - The results are in, and only one Texas city cracked the top 10 of Money Magazine's newest 'Best Places to Live in America' ranking. The magazine named McKinney as the second best city in the nation, behind only Carmel, Indiana. The complete 100-city list was revealed on Monday morning.
Located about 30 miles north of Dallas, in Collin County, and boasting a population of more than 136,000 people, McKinney has now moved up the 'Best Places' list twice. The city debuted on the list at number 14 in 2008, and then moved up to number 5 in 2010. The rankings are compiled every other year. Click here to see this year's complete list.
Money Magazine ranks communities based on housing affordability, education, safety, health care, arts and culture, the economy and diversity. The publication visited McKinney in July to interview residents and assess key locations, traffic, events and community spirit. The city of McKinney was a standout thanks to its job availability and its lively historic downtown area. "Low taxes have lured companies with white-collar jobs in technology and energy, a new hospital opened in July, and a conference center and hotel complex is in the works," the magazine said.
"Ranking among the very best places to live in the country is a distinction we greatly value," said McKinney Mayor Brian Loughmiller in an emailed news release. "McKinney is a great place to live, arguably the best. Our community has a consistently high quality of life for our residents, no matter how we grow and change. It's amazing what we have in our city, and it's just going to get better."
Four other Texas cities -- including three in North Texas -- made Money Magazine's list. Allen ranked at number 13, Mansfield ranked at number 28 and Flower Mound ranked at number 32. Pflugerville, located in Central Texas, just north of Austin, made the list at number 43.
