Mansfield Opens 'Unique' 80-Acre Park

MANSFIELD (CBSDFW.COM) - The city of Mansfield opened a new, 80-acre park on Saturday along the northern edge of Walnut Creek.

According to press release from the city, the new Elmer W. Oliver Nature Park is intended to surround visitors with nature by housing native plants and wildlife in their "tranquil, natural setting."

A ribbon-cutting ceremony took place Saturday morning at 10 o'clock, followed by park tours, nature activities and animal exhibits.

Some of the park's features include soft surface trails, ponds and a treehouse overlook. Eventually, the park is expected to connect the Walnut Linear trail system that is accessed at the park west of Joe Pool Lake.
A nature center and learning lab for students is also in the works.

"Very rarely does a city get the opportunity to open a park like Oliver Nature Park, 80 acres of untouched land where wagon trains once traveled and where wildlife still roams, totally surrounded by development," spokeswoman Belinda Willis said.
