Is Kinky Gearing Up For Another Political Run?
NORTH TEXAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Are you ready to get Kinky? After several failed attempts to reach the governor's mansion a Texas singer, songwriter, humorist and aspiring politician isn't giving up.
On his most recent musical tour across the Lone Star State, Kinky Friedman says a lot of people have come up to him upset with the way things are being run in Texas and with Governor Rick Perry's famous gaffe riddled failed bid for the White House.
"Seems to me that the people that really were Rick Perry's base are the ones that are the most upset,' Friedman said. "They feel that he embarrassed the state, he embarrassed Texas and it doesn't sound like they're gonna forgive him for that."
With Perry's failed presidential bid and Lt. Governor David Dewhurst's loss in the Republican primary, despite Perry's endorsement, Friedman thinks the state may be ready for a "Kinky" governor.
"People were worried about me being, about a comedian being in the governor's mansion, when I ran for governor in 2006. Well now I think everybody knows we've got one," Friedman said.
Friedman says at this point he's still weighing whether or not he'll officially announce any intention to run for governor, but he says he's been getting a lot of support.
"I think the time is now and the way to do it is to run in the Democratic primary, and if I can win that I think that a lot of us will see a brighter day… at least for Texas," he said.
In his opinion, Kinky said one major problem facing the residents of Texas is that this has been a 'red state' for decades.
"For 25 years one party has controlled every political office statewide and that is great breeding ground for laziness and corruption," Friedman said. "And it's one reason Texas is number one in business climate and 49th in education."
Friedman first began his political career as a Republican, running for Justice of the Peace in Kerrville. He lost the election. Then Friedman began his famous campaign to become the governor of Texas in 2006. Among his campaign slogans – "How Hard Could It Be?" "Why the hell Not?" and "He Ain't Kinky, He's My Governor."
