Fort Worth Native Nancy Lee Bass Dead At 95

FORT WORTH (CBS 11 NEWS) - Just days after the passing of world famous pianist Van Cliburn, another one of the city's most cherished residents has died.

Nancy Lee Bass, the matriarch of the philanthropic Bass family, passed away last night, one week before her 96th birthday.

Nancy Lee Bass was born in Fort Worth and friends say she spent a lifetime serving and supporting the city she loved so much.

Bass and her husband, Perry, who made his fortune in oil, were generous contributors to the city and especially to the arts.

The world famous Bass Concert Hall is named in their honor.

The suggestion to do so, we're told, came from a close personal friend, Fort Worth pianist Van Cliburn.

Mrs. Bass' volunteer service touched many areas as she served on numerous boards, including the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth.

They released a statement calling the Bass family's support 'crucial' to the success of the museum.

"They have continued to support the museum through their family's foundation, giving the community an important resource for enjoying and learning about art now and into the future."

Bass is survived by her four sons: Sid, Edward, Robert and Lee.

The family released a statement saying, "Our mother passed away last night peacefully in her home, seven days shy of her 96th birthday. Her life spanned 10 decades of exceptional love, affection and joy."

Gov. Rick Perry has also released a statement regarding the passing of Bass:

"The generosity of Nancy Lee Bass touched the lives of countless people in Fort Worth, throughout Texas and across the nation. As the matriarch of a legendary Texas family, she all too often found herself in the spotlight, when she vastly preferred quietly giving generously to the causes she and her late husband, Perry Bass, believed in. Texas has suffered the loss of a true philanthropist. Anita joins me in offering our deepest condolences to her sons, her extended family and her many, many friends across the state."
