Forney's Crosby Elementary School To Reopen Monday
FORNEY (CBSDFW.COM) - Hundreds of structures across North Texas were damaged by Tuesday afternoon's storms, which saw an estimated 12 tornadoes rip through the area. One of the hardest hit cities was Forney in Kaufman County, where an elementary school just barely escaped the path of a twister.
A tornado touched down in the Diamond Creek subdivision in Forney, located near Crosby Elementary School. While the school itself was not hit by the tornado, the building did experience extremely high winds, which broke windows on the school's east side, damaged air conditioning units and ripped off portions of the school's roof. The school was still without power a full day later.
Classes at the elementary school were canceled on Wednesday. Structural engineers, contractors and Forney Independent School District officials spent the day working to get Crosby Elementary School ready for students once again. An inspection of the building found no structural damage. Workers have been busy quickly cleaning up debris, replacing windows and air conditioning units, and fixing damaged parts of the roof. Very minor repairs are also needed for the indoor ceiling grid.
The district expects repairs to be completed by Monday. Until then, students and staff members are not being allowed into the building, to ensure that all necessary repairs are being done safely. Classes will resume as scheduled for students and staff members at 7:50 a.m. on Monday.
