Drivers To Pay For Tolled Lanes On DFW Connector
DENTON (CBSDFW.COM) - Free rides on the TEXpress lanes of the DFW Connector came to an end Monday.
Starting Monday morning for the next six months, drivers will have to pay between $0.67 and $1.00 to drive in the four miles of managed lanes that run on SH 114 from west of SH 26 to east of International Parkway.
Drivers without an electronic toll tag will pay a 50-percent surcharge.
During this six month period, TxDOT will watch to see how many drivers are willing to pay to drive on the TEXpress lanes at the rate of $0.67 and at $1.00 during peak rush hours.
Using that data, starting next year the toll rates will fluctuate. The more the highway is congested, the more it will cost drivers.
The idea is no matter how slow the traffic is moving on the free lanes, drivers will be able to go at least 50 miles per hour in the express lanes.
The TEXpress lanes on the DFW Connector are just the second of its kind in North Texas.
In December, TEXpress lanes opened on 3.2 mile sections of the LBJ Expressway in North Dallas. The second phase of the LBJ Expressway project is scheduled to open later this week.
In the next four years, four other TEXpress lane projects will open, including managed lanes on I-35W and I-35E.
