DPS: Two Dead In Ellis County Small Plane Crash

ELLIS (CBSDFW.COM) Texas DPS officials have said two people died in a single engine plane crash in rural Ellis County Sunday morning. The plane took off from Greenville and was headed to Austin.

Ellis County Sheriffs along with DPS responded to a report of black smoke that led them to the crash off FM-984 and Gorman Road, near the Navarro County line.

"We knew it was bad. We were hoping maybe a guy jumped so we started looking in the fields for them," said witness Scott White, who lives in the small town of Rankin.

Another witness told police he saw the small Beechcraft plane level off as though it was about to make an emergency landing when it stalled.

The aircraft was identified as a 1975 single engine Beechcraft, Model 33. The wreckage burned about an acre of land.

The FAA will investigate the crash until the National Transportation Safety Board takes over Monday.

The names of the deceased are unknown at this time.
