Four Dead, Seven Injured In Head-On Crash

SOMERVELL COUNTY (CBSDFW.COM) - Four people are dead and seven were hurt after a horrific head-on crash in Somervell County, a few miles from the city of Glen Rose. CBS 11 News has learned that one of the vehicles involved in the crash is registered to a North Texas couple.

Hours after the crash on U.S. Highway 67, the scene from Chopper 11 showed the remnants of a maroon-colored minivan and white, 4-door sedan. The hoods of both were completely crushed in.

CBS 11 learned that several members of a Bedford family were traveling in the maroon Kia Sedona mini-van. Mark Burns, 57, and his wife Darla, 53, and Mark's 90-year-old mother Wanda Burns were traveling to a family reunion when the crash happened. All three were killed.

The driver of the white Pontiac, Abel Perez, of Stratford (near Amarillo) was east bound on 67, when according to witnesses, he strayed into the west bound lane. His wife, Lydia Perez, 47, was killed. A 19-year-old passenger and Mr. Perez were picked up by CareFlite helicopter and taken to John Peter Smith Hospital. CBS 11 confirmed that two children were taken to Cook Children's Medical Center in Fort Worth. The adults were transported to John Peter Smith Hospital. Their medical conditions aren't known.

Glen Rose Medical Center CEO Ray Reynolds spoke to KRLD NewsRadio 1080, "We received two patients that are being treated in our emergency room and then we did direct transfer a patient by helicopter, from the ambulance to the helicopter on our site."

Highway 67, west of Glen Rose, remains closed in both directions.

Debris on the highway included automobile doors, fenders, car parts and personal items catapulted from inside the vehicles.
