Arlington Police Chief Angry Over Steroid Scandal

ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) - Chief Will Johnson with the Arlington Police Department is speaking out for the first time about the federal investigation into his own officers. The case has left one officer dead and a veteran of the department out of a job, and a probe into who else could be involved in the steroid scandal is just beginning.

They were hired to uphold the law. But now, the Arlington police chief is expressing his anger over allegations that several of his officers violated that trust. The policemen have been accused of selling anabolic steroids and protecting their alleged drug dealer.

"There's no way for us to say there's not a problem," Johnson said.

Johnson announced on Thursday that Thomas Kantzos had been terminated. Kantzos had been with the Arlington Police Department for about 18 years. He was arrested on Tuesday and charged with exceeding authorized access to a protected computer. Investigators alleged that Kantzos used police computers to arrange sales with other officers and provide information to a suspected drug dealer. Kantzos is now free on bond.

That suspected drug dealer was arrested in January and had been working as an FBI witness.

Two other police officers had been implicated in the investigation. David Vo was arrested for allegedly buying and distributing illegal steroids, and his arrest was enough to convince the department that there was likely a wider problem. Vo committed suicide after bonding out of jail. And Craig Harmons remains on administrative leave under suspicion of being involved in this case.

Johnson laid out a plan to begin drug testing every police employee. Currently, only undercover officers and those being promoted are subjected to drug testing. The chief said that random drug tests will begin immediately. "If I find out they are doing illegal drugs," Johnson stated, "they will be terminated."
