ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) -Residents in one Arlington neighborhood woke up to the sound of an explosion and flames shooting through the roof of a home on the 5600 block of Parliament Drive.
The Arlington Fire Department says a neighbor called 911 to report the fire.
"At 6:46 AM we got a call from the street over stating they saw a house on fire and heard an explosion," says Battalion Chief Jim Morris.
Investigators say a person in the home, managed to make his way out, walking about 15 feet from the doorway when he possibly collapsed. When they arrived firefighters would find a man's lifeless body strewn out on the front yard.
The fast moving fire was not the only threat to first responders. Firefighters who were tackling the flames from inside of the home were forced to exit the house for their own safety.
"There was an extreme amount of ammunition that was going off, some of the rounds penetrated the exterior wall of the house." said Battalion Chief Jim Morris.
Crews then started an exterior attack of the fire and were able to extinguish the flames.
A firefighter was injured as he exited the home, falling from an elevated porch. His injuries were minor.
The victim has not been identified. An investigation into what caused the fire is under investigation.
