PLANO/RICHARDSON (CBSDFW.COM) — Three people are dead after an SUV rolled off an overpass, landing on the ground 63 feet below, officials say.

Highway patrol troopers responded to the crash on the President George Bush Turnpike near the U.S. Highway 75 overpass around 6:50 p.m. Saturday, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. Four people total were in the Chevrolet Tahoe.

The SUV was driving east in the right lane on the turnpike when the driver swerved left to avoid slowing traffic in the lane, crossing all three lanes. The driver then swerved back to the right and lost control of the SUV, according to DPS.

The SUV rolled multiple times and hit another car before rolling off the turnpike, DPS said.

The driver was conscious at the scene and was taken to Medical Center of Plano for treatment. Two passengers were also taken to the hospital, where they died, DPS said. One passenger died at the scene. No one in the other car was injured.

The crash is under investigation.
