21 Best Rangers Ever: Jeff Burroughs

ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) - The #1 pick in the 1969 Major League Baseball draft is your #18 Best Ranger Ever.

Jeff Burroughs, who arrived with the team from Washington in 1972, became one of the Rangers' first star players, hitting 30 home runs in 1973.  He tied Frank Robinson for second place in the American League that season behind Reggie Jackson.

But Burroughs is best known in Rangers history for being the first player to win a major award, bringing the American League MVP crown home in 1974.  That season 'The Texas Power Plant' as he was dubbed, hit .301 for the year with 25 home runs and 118 runs batted in.

Rangers faithful who remember his playing days say Burroughs would have hit even more homers had it not been for the prevailing south winds that plagued Arlington Stadium in the 1970's.

After being traded away in 1976, Burroughs went on to play for another 10 seasons with the Braves, Mariners, A's & Blue Jays.  He retired in 1985 and moved into coaching little league, leading his son Sean's team to the 1992 & 1993 Little League World Series titles.
