New Documentary Examines Detroit's Untested Rape-Kit Backlog
After years starring in "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," Mariska Hargitay is now highlighting the subject matter in a new way by producing "I Am Evidence," a sobering and timely look at the way rape kits have been left to languish, a policy decision with the ghastly effect of enabling serial perpetrators to continue assaulting women.
Detroit plays a key role in the documentary, through the story of Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy. Worthy took on the daunting task of dealing with the more than 11,300 untested rape kits that one of her staffers discovered in 2009, untested in a Detroit Police storage building.
