Would-Be Robbers On The Run After Police Chase; Suspect Who Casually Walked Away Captured
DETROIT (WWJ) - Two suspects are on the run and another is facing charges after a morning of crime, gunfire and a police chase in Detroit.
The incident unfolded early Wednesday after police received a report of shots fired near Elmhurst Avenue and Martindale Street, in a west side neighborhood near Livernois Avenue and I-96.
The victim told police a vehicle pulled up and a group of men got out, flashed a weapon and announced a robbery. When the man took off running, the suspects apparently started shooting before getting back into their car and speeding away from the scene.
Police caught up and gave chase, going the wrong way on several roads before a tire blew on the suspects' vehicle, which turned down San Juan Drive -- a dead-end street.
After the vehicle stopped, two men who were sitting the front fled from the scene on foot. Officers chased the suspects over a five-foot tall chain fence, but the duo was able to escape.
The officers went back to their patrol car to review dash cam video for leads on the two suspects when they noticed a third man was involved. That suspect got out of the vehicle's back seat after police chased his partners in crime, and casually walked away from the scene.
Officers started canvasing the neighborhood and eventually captured the third suspect. Police on the scene told WWJ's Mike Campbell they believe this suspect is the gunman from the earlier incident.
Police are still looking for two suspects, but did not immediately provide their descriptions.
No one was injured during the incident, which remains under investigation.
Anyone with information on the suspects or the incident is urged to contact police at 313-596-2200.
