Bond Set At $50K For Woman Who Brought Gun To City Hall
DETROIT (WWJ) - Bond has been set at $50,000/10 percent for a California woman who allegedly tried to carry a pistol into Detroit City Hall.
Police said 54-year-old Elmira Sutton, of Pittsburg, California, along with a male companion, attempted to go through security inside the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center Tuesday morning with the weapon.
Sutton reportedly said they were on their way to a City Council meeting. Both were taken into custody after the man reportedly said the gun belonged to him.
Sutton stood mute on Thursday as magistrate Renee McDuffy entered a plea of not guilty on her behalf to one count of carrying a concealed weapon.
Calling the charge "a very serious matter," McDuffy said it is alleged that Sutton knew she had the gun in her purse and she does not have a concealed weapons license.
A source said Sutton has no previous criminal record.
The incident prompted a discussion among council members concerning their security. (More on this here).
Sutton's companion was not expected to face charges.
