Woman Hospitalized After Car-Train Crash
ANN ARBOR TWP. (WWJ/AP) - Authorities say a woman whose compact car was struck and dragged by an oncoming train in Ann Arbor Township has been hospitalized.
The accident happened at Pontiac Trail, just south of Warren, around 4:30 a.m. Friday, when a 2006 Ford Focus struck a train while it was in motion and was dragged from the intersection and into a ditch.
The Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office said the train operator did not immediately know that the train had been struck and continued on. Around 6 a.m., another train going through the area observed the car and contacted 911, according to police.
Responding firefighters found the 23-year-old Livonia woman pinned inside her vehicle, but in stable condition. She was transported to a local hospital and is expected to fully recover from her injuries.
Fire Capt. Doug Eder said the location is a train switching area. The railroad crossing has no gate, but does have a signal.
Police say alcohol and drugs are not suspected as being factors in the crash. An investigation is ongoing.
