Woman Hires Impersonator To Defraud Social Security
DETROIT (WWJ) - A Detroit woman accused of defrauding Social Security of nearly $120,000 over two decades said she needed the money to raise five grandchildren.
Mary Alice Austin pleaded guilty to unlawfully cashing Social Security checks and will be sentenced Friday in federal court.
The 67 year-old is expected to get 10-16 months behind bars.
The U.S. Attorney's office said on three separate occasions, Austin hired someone to impersonate her son, who was in prison, in order to defraud the Social Security Administration.
