Woman Stabbed To Death At Troy Apartment Complex, Neighbor Charged

TROY (WWJ) - Police say a man accused of stabbing a 37-year-old woman to death at a large apartment complex in Troy was the victim's neighbor.

The woman was found dead around 5:15 p.m. Monday in a unit at the Somerset Park Apartment complex on Golfview Drive, near Big Beaver Road and Coolidge Highway. She was stabbed multiple times and medical examiners ruled the death a homicide.

Troy Police Captain Robert Redmond said investigators had a suspect in mind right away — a 53-year-old man who lives in the same apartment building as the victim.

"Almost immediately based on the crime that occurred, based on where it occurred, we had suspects in mind -- specifically one and we targeted basically all our efforts on the one suspect," Redmond told WWJ's Mike Campbell.

Redmond said Troy police have had multiple previous contacts with the suspect, Charles Anthony Stephens, who was taken into custody around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Stephens was arraigned in 2-4 District Court late Wednesday afternoon on a charge of felony murder. Bond was denied.

The woman's name isn't being released at this time because her family, who lives in India, could not immediately be notified. Her husband, who was out of the country in South Korea at the time, flew home late Tuesday night and was notified of his wife's death upon arrival at Detroit Metro Airport.

"Absolutely the husband is not a suspect in this case," Redmond said. "This was a case of a breaking and entering and a confrontation with the woman in the home."

Stephens remains lodged at the Oakland County Jail. He's scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary exam on Thursday, April 7, at 10 a.m.
