Woman Dies After Tree Falls On Tent At State Park
CAMBRIDGE TWP. (WWJ/AP) - Authorities say a Detroit area woman died after a tree fell on a tent while she was camping with her family at a state park in Lenawee County.
The incident happened just before midnight Saturday at Hayes State Park in Cambridge Township, about 60 miles southwest of Detroit.
Police say the large maple tree broke off at the ground and fell on top of a tent that was occupied by 39-year-old Mary Hickling, of Lincoln Park.
Several campers rendered first aid and helped clear away tree debris. Hickling was rushed to the hospital where she was pronounced dead on Sunday.
Hickling's two children, ages 7 and 11, were also at the campsite but weren't injured. Her husband, who was sitting at the campfire, was also uninjured.
Hayes State Park manager Jim O'Brien told The Daily Telegram of Adrian that the tree had "no signs of problems" before it fell.
The state Department of Natural Resources is investigating.
