Woman Cleared Of Murder Charge In Detroit Princess Shooting
DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - A jury has acquitted a woman of attempted murder and other felonies while convicting her of a concealed weapon charge for her role in a shootout that left six Detroit Princess riverboat passengers wounded.
The Wayne County Circuit Court jury reached the verdict Monday in the trial of 28-year-old Latoiya Mitchell-Thomas. She's due back in court for sentencing on June 3.
The shootings occurred Aug. 6 on the Detroit River following a fight between Mitchell-Thomas, her husband Michael Thomas and another woman.
Authorities say Mitchell-Thomas fired into a crowd from a car after passengers left the boat. Police said one man was critically injured, while the remaining victims suffered only minor injuries.
Prosecutors say LaDon Richard shot Thomas later that day. Richard is scheduled for trial June 24 on attempted murder charges.
Michael Thomas received 2 years' probation at his March sentencing for felonious assault.
