Woman Charged With Smuggling Pot Into Mich. Prison
BLACKMAN TOWNSHIP (AP) - A Detroit woman accused of choking on marijuana after being caught smuggling it into a southern Michigan prison has been charged.
MLive.com says 31-year-old Kenya Latosha Cabel was charged Friday with bringing contraband into a prison. She remains jailed on a $5,000 bond.
Corrections officials say on May 11 Cabel attempted to smuggle marijuana packed inside balloons into the Cooper Street Correctional Facility near Jackson for an inmate housed there. An officer questioned her after noticing something in the waistline of her pants.
Cabel then tried to swallow the balloons of marijuana and began choking. She was transported to a medical facility, where detectives waited until the marijuana passed through her system.
It was not immediately known if Cabel had a lawyer.
Cabel faces a July 10 preliminary exam.
