Winter Storm Warning: Up To 8 Inches Of Snow To Fall, Beginning Overnight
DETROIT (WWJ) - Metro Detroit can't seem to break free from winter's ruthless grip, with four to eight inches of fresh snow expected to fall overnight Tuesday into Wednesday.
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning, in effect from 2 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday for all of Southeast Michigan.
WWJ AccuWeather Meteorologist John Feerick said, following a mild day with temperatures in the 50s, the rain will begin to fall Tuesday evening.
"Then we will drop down to 27 later tonight," Feerick said. "That rain goes over to snow later tonight, and then we'll have snow at varying rates through tomorrow (Wednesday), probably tapering off though tomorrow afternoon."
The snow may be heavy at times, possibly accumulating at rate of an inch per hour — which means metro Detroit motorists will likely be in for a slippery, slow morning commute.
The highest accumulations are expected south of Detroit to the Ann Arbor line. Areas in the southern Lower Peninsula near Ohio and Indiana could see as much as six to eight inches. Forecasters say northerly wind gusts over 30 mph are also possible Wednesday; which could cause some blowing and drifting of the snow.
Some local communities have declared snow emergencies, which means residents have to move their cars and trucks off city streets so plows can do their work or face a fine. In Warren, the snow emergency begins at 7 p.m. Tuesday. At midnight, snow emergencies take effect in Berkley, Southgate, and South Lyon. In Garden City, a snow emergency goes into effect at 7 a.m. Wednesday; and at noon Wednesday in Oak Park.
While many WWJ listeners have been saying they're sick of the snow, but one local man told us he's rolling with it.
"This is winter! Four seasons ... In winter, anything can happen," he said. "It's different from usual, but it says that in the Bible: The days are changing. I deal with the punches. Whatever he puts down, it is what it is."
