Wings Set New NHL Record With 23 Straight Wins At Home
DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - The Detroit Red Wings set a new NHL record with consecutive wins on home ice beating the San Jose Sharks 3-2 on Sunday.
As heard on 97.1 The Ticket - Detroit sweeps the six-game homestand and set a new NHL record with 23 straight home wins with Joey MacDonald between the posts with 31 saves helping take the Wings into the record books.
The Wings took an early lead with a backhand shot by Henrik Zetterberg in the first period and Drew Miller put Detroit up 2-0 in the second.
Logan Couture scored late in the second period for the Sharks and the Wings followed with what would be the winning goal by Darren Helm in the third.
Patrick Marleau pulled the Sharks within a goal with 4:44 left.
"You know we never gave up, you have to play for 60 minutes ... it's nice to get another win," said Zetterberg. "It's nice to see the points come ... it's easy to have some let down after making a record ... (these are) always tight games."
"To be the guy thrown in there ... just got to keep building on it, just got to give your team a chance to win, this teams always shows up," said winning goalie Joey MacDonald.
Detroit, which broke the league's single-season record of 20 on Tuesday, surpassed the 22 wins in a row the Boston Bruins had over two seasons more than eight decades ago.
The Red Wings have an NHL-high 84 points.
