Wings Fall To Penguins In Shootout
DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Two power-play goals for the Red Wings in the third period let them tie the score in regulation play but Detroit ends up losing in a shootout to the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-4 on Monday.
The Wings were down 4-0 at one point in the second period. "Fairly innocent looking plays turned into goals (against the Wings)," says Mike Madano on 97.1 The Ticket, Madano tied the game 4-4 with a power-play goal in the third.
The Penguins' James Neal scored the only goal in the shootout to give Pittsburgh the win, after blowing a 4-0 lead.
"We felt if we got it to two (goals)- we'd have a good chance at the game," says Madano post-game.
Henrik Zetterberg's goal started Detroit's comeback late in the second, Cleary, Filppula and Modano each scored in regulation.
Just hours after Penguins forward Matt Cooke was suspended by the NHL for the rest of the regular season and the first round of the playoffs for an elbow to the head of New York Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh, Pascal Dupuis had two goals and an assist to help Pittsburgh build its big lead.
Tyler Kennedy put Pittsburgh ahead 4-0 at 13:16 of the second period, ending goalie Jimmy Howard's night. Joey MacDonald stopped all 10 shots he faced before the shootout.
Brent Johnson stopped 37 shots for the Penguins.
