Windsor Industrial Fire Sends Smoke Billowing Across Detroit River

WINDSOR (WWJ) - Some plastic containers burst into flames, sending plumes of black smoke into the air in Windsor near the Detroit River.

The blaze broke out at around 3:30 p.m. in an industrial area the 600-block of Sprucewood, just down the street from the Windsor Raceway.

Multiple witnesses calling the WWJ Newsradio 950 newsroom reported seeing smoke from miles away.

"Billowing clouds, black, going up a thousand feet, maybe more," said one Detroiter. "It's headed toward the downtown area and it's flooding Southwest Detroit, coming across the river."

Said another man, "From Fort Street and Outer Drive, it looks like the whole town of Windsor's burning down -- it's such a big ... billowing black smoke and it looks like it's getting worse."

Fire crews were on the scene working to prevent the blaze from spreading to nearby businesses.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known.

No injuries have been reported.
