Windsor Hosts 'World Under-17 Hockey Challenge' Tournament

WINDSOR, Ont. (WWJ) - Thousands of young hockey players from around Canada, the US and other parts of the world are gathering in the Windsor area this week, where the city will host the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge for the very first time.

Organizer Borden Yewchyn told WWJ's Sandra McNeill the tournament is a chance to see some up and coming stars.

"There's been some very high-profile players that will come this event and there will be scouts watching what's going on because with the NHL draft coming up in a couple of years, these kids are going to be the ones to watch for," said Yewchyn.

Five teams representing Canda and five international squads (USA, Czech Republic, Russia, Germany, Sweden) will compete in the tournament, which is held Dec. 28 through Jan. 7.

"There's a lof of interest in the Southwest and Southeast areas of Michigan because the US teams are based out of Ann Arbor, it's very easy for people to come over to Windsor to check these games out and see that team play as well," said Yewchyn.

The game schedule includes 10 games at each of the WFCU Centre, the Vollmer Culture and Recreational Complex in LaSalle, and Tecumseh Arena. The UCCU Complex in Amherstburg and the Essex Sports Centre Complex will play host to exhibition games. The Bronze and Gold Medal games will be played in Windsor.
