Wind Advisory In Effect Overnight
DETROIT (WWJ) - Strong winds are expected Friday evening and overnight. That's according to the National Weather Service, which has issued a Wind Advisory for lower Michigan.
Sustained winds of about 30 mph are expected, with wind gusts between 45 mph and 57 mph possible.
Loose objects including trash cans could be blown around and damaged to trees and power lines is possible. Weather officials advise motorists to use caution, as wind gusts can make driving difficult.
Drivers of "high profile" vehicles trying to cross the Mackinac Bridge will require an escort. Those include vehicles with campers, cars with boats attached, and semi-tractors.
Mackinac Bridge Authority Spokesman Bob Sweeney tells WWJ Newsradio 950 the wind speeds have been well above the threshold for requiring vehicle escorts.
However, Sweeney said it's still safe for drivers to cross the bridge if they're careful.
"As long as they maintain their speed at a very slow pace they can maintain control their vehicle during some high winds and the occasional gusts that go through as well," he said.
The wind advisory will remain in effect for the region until 2 a.m. Saturday.
