Will You Take The "No Shopping On Thanksgiving Day" Pledge?
DETROIT (WWJ) - You've heard of the so-called "War on Christmas" ... but is there a war on Thanksgiving, too?
With many retailers announcing they plan to open their doors on Thanksgiving Day, some people are saying enough is enough.
An Ann Arbor-area therapist and author is asking Michiganders to take a "No Shopping On Thanksgiving Day" pledge:
"For myself, those I love, and those asked to give up their plans to serve me, I pledge not to shop at any retailer stores on Thanksgiving Day," Annie Zirkel told WWJ Newsradio 950's Marie Osborne.
Zirkel started a Facebook page for those who want to push back at retailers who decided to jumpstart their holiday shopping season on Thursday, Nov. 28 — ahead of those who will open on Black Friday.
Several local shopping centers, including Great Lakes Crossing Outlets in Auburn Hills, Fairlane Town Center in Dearborn, and Twelve Oaks mall in Novi will be open this year; along with some major retailers including Target, Macy's and JCPenney stores.
Zirkel said she's disappointed so many retailers have chosen to open on the holiday, but she's not anti-shopping.
Zirkel said she wants everyone to understand this is the one day of the year set aside to give thanks for what we have — not a day to run out to get more stuff.
"I've come to the conclusion that, really, a great solution would be similar to what Massachusetts has: A blue law for Thanksgiving Day — just no retail," she said.
